Neither American history nor American society anticipated, sanctioned, or encouraged the development of either Black intellectuals or a Black middle class. Both emerged and developed against horrendous obstacles and both are great achievements. Both were sanctioned and given moral direction by the American Negro Academy, an organization founded in 1897 by Alexander Crummell, W.E.B. Du Bois, Francis Grimke, and others for the purpose of organizing Black intellectuals to defend and redeem Blacks, through intellectual, artistic, and scientific achievements in the face of racist detractors, and to help the Black middle class develop as the leadership class of Black America. Black intellectuals have had a difficult time fulfilling a leadership role, partly because they have failed to remember the three cultural heritages of Black people: Black, African, and Euro-American. The times demand that Black intellectuals approach themselves and their world from all three cultural perspectives, for the sake of Black people and for the sake of America, both of which desperately need their leadership.

When Houston A. Baker, Jr., one of America's foremost literary critics, first published Afro-American Poetics in 1988, it was hailed as a major revisionist history of both African American culture and criticism. Now available in paperback, this ambitious and enlightening book juxtaposes two of the most fertile periods of African American culture, the 1920s and the 1960s; it includes essays on Jean Toomer, Countee Cullen, Amiri Baraka, Larry Neal, and Hoyt Fuller. This is also Baker's most personal book, an intellectual autobiography tracing his own beginnings as a scholar of Victorian literature, his "second birth" as he began teaching African American literature, and his visions and revisions of a black aesthetic.

In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the black son of an African father and white American mother searches for a functional purpose in life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father, a figure he knows more as a myth than a man, was killed in a car accident. That sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey - first to small-town Kansas, where he sees his mother's family move to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, faces the bitter truth of his father's life, and finally comes to terms with their shared heritage.

Excerpt: ' The Brahman,' continued Night-cloud, ' suspected nothing more than did the Camel; and when the third knave had broken his jest upon him for bearing a dog, he threw it down, washed himself clean of the contamination, and went home; while the knaves secured and cooked his goat.' 'But, Night-cloud,' asked the Rajah, 'how couldst thou abide so long among enemies, and conciliate them ?' ' It is easy to play the courtier for a purpose,' said Night- cloud -- ' Courtesy may cover malice; on their heads the woodmen bring, Meaning all the while to burn them, logs and fagots -- oh, my King! And the strong and subtle river, rippling at the cedar's foot, While it seems to lave and kiss it, undermines the hanging root.' Indeed, it has been said -- ' A wise man for an object's sake His foe upon his back will take, As with the Frogs once did the Snake.' 'How was that?' asked the Peacock-King. The Crow related: -- The Story of the Frogs and the Old Serpent " In a deserted garden there once lived a Serpent, ' Slow- coil ' by name; who had reached an age when he was no longer able to obtain his own food. Lying listlessly by the edge of a pond, he was descried by a certain Frog, and interrogated -- ' Have you given Features & details Product Information Publisher Cosmo Publications Publication date17 Mar 2008 Language English Product Dimensions16.5 x 23 cm ISBN-10: 813070708X ISBN-13: 978-8130707082

This book breaks new theoretical and methodological ground in the study of the African diaspora in the Atlantic world. Leading scholars of archaeology, linguistics, and socio-cultural anthropology draw upon extensive field experiences and archival investigations of black communities in North America, the Caribbean, South America, and Africa to challenge received paradigms in Afro-American anthropology. They employ dialogic approaches that demand both an awareness of the historical fashioning of anthropology's categories and selfreflexive, critical research and define a new agenda for the field. Paying close attention to power, politics, and the dynamism of never-finished, open-ended behavioral forms and symbolic repertoires, the contributors address colonialism, the slave trade, racism, ethnogenesis, New World nationalism, urban identity politics, the development of artworlds, musics and their publics, the emergence of new religious and ritual forms, speech genres, and contested historical representations. The authors offer sophisticated interpretations of cultural change, exchange, appropriation, and re-appropriation that challenge simplistic notions of culture.
