North Sea gas was being piped ashore and colour TV was launched. The British way of life was changing forever. In the same week that the Beatles released Sergeant Pepper, another cultural icon emerged; a brand new definitive stamp was issued, soon hailed as a milestone in stamp design. Designed by Arnold Machin, release of the  new definitive was finally overseen by Postmaster General Edward Short in June 1967. He described it simply as “one of the greatest stamps of all time”. Your coin first day cover pays tribute to this pivotal moment in postal history, celebrating the Machin definitive through the ‘Embossed’ printing process used to produce the stamps in the pane. Embossing is a ‘relief’ process giving depth to the printed stamps. The pane featured on your coin cover was produced using a die from the original Machin cast.
