3D Animation programming interfaces Artists typically complete their work in Maya by using its graphical user interface. The interface includes menus, dialog boxes, buttons, and so on to give users a visual means of performing actions. There is another way to perform these same actions. Maya programming allows users to complete the same tasks by writing and executing a program. This program can be developed using one of Maya's two programming interfaces: MEL or C++. MEL is an acronym for Maya Embedded Language. This is a custom programming language designed specifically to work inside Maya. Due to its simpler structure and syntax, it is easier and more widely accessible than the C++ programming interface. One of MEL's great strengths is that it is an interpreted language. While typical programming languages require that you compile and then link your source code, an interpreted language can be executed immediately. This ability to immediately execute your instructions means that MEL is particularly well suited to rapid prototyping. You can more readily design and implement new ideas, since the compilelink step isn't needed. In fact, MEL can be written, debugged, and tested entirely within Maya. There is no need to use external compilers or debuggers.
