From the stage of the French Quarter saloon, Jilly Blaine felt his stare. He was alone, impeccably dressed-and his eyes blazed into hers.... Why would a handsome young man like him come to Chez Bernie three nights in a row, alone, and stare at one of the dancers in the chorus? He'd even sent a note backstage that said he wanted to meet her. From a monied New Orleans family, Parker Debevoise had nothing in common with Jilly--but she felt drawn to him nonetheless. He courted her in his chauffer-driven Rolls-Royce, and showered her with roses and champagne. Jilly had never felt so special.... She'd do anything to hide the secrets of the past. The truth couldn't keep them apart, but wouldn't let them be together.

Divided We Stand is a study of how class and race have intersected in American society--above all, in the "making" and remaking of the American working class in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Focusing mainly on longshoremen in the ports of New York, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, and on steelworkers in many of the nation's steel towns, it examines how European immigrants became American and "white" in the crucible of the industrial workplace and the ethnic and working-class neighborhood. As workers organized on the job, especially during the overlapping CIO and civil rights eras in the middle third of the twentieth century, trade unions became a vital arena in which "old" and "new" immigrants and black migrants forged new alliances and identities and tested the limits not only of class solidarity but of American democracy. The most volatile force in this regard was the civil rights movement. As it crested in the 1950s and '60s, "the Movement" confronted unions anew with the question, "Which side are you on?" This book demonstrates the complex ways in which labor organizations answered that question and the complex relationships between union leaders and diverse rank-and-file constituencies in addressing it. Divided We Stand includes vivid examples of white working-class "agency" in the construction of racially discriminatory employment structures. But Nelson is less concerned with racism as such than with the concrete historical circumstances in which racialized class identities emerged and developed. This leads him to a detailed and often fascinating consideration of white, working-class ethnicity but also to a careful analysis of black workers--their conditions of work, their aspirations and identities, their struggles for equality. Making its case with passion and clarity, Divided We Stand will be a compelling and controversial book.

There is an overwhelming stirring in the black community to stand with and support Israel. Generations of African American Christians have had a biblical allegiance to the Jewish people but without a clear understanding of why this is so important or a practical plan for how to help Israel. African Americans can identify with the pain and plight of a people dislocated, disenfranchised, and disheartened. Yet it is the Jewish community that has supported the African American community during some of its most challenging times. In fact, did you know that a disproportionate number of non-blacks who marched during the civil rights movement of the 1960s were Jewish? We Too Stand seeks to enlighten and educate African American churches and communities across the country about the importance of supporting Israel. This book will serve as a comprehensive study for any African American church setting regardless of denomination. We Too Stand will be important to African American churches and the Jewish community at large, as it will seek to build bridges of commonality and cultural appreciation.

Watch a video Read discussion questions for The Last Stand. The bestselling author of Mayflower sheds new light on one of the iconic stories of the American West Little Bighorn and Custer are names synonymous in the American imagination with unmatched bravery and spectacular defeat. Mythologized as Custer's Last Stand, the June 1876 battle has been equated with other famous last stands, from the Spartans' defeat at Thermopylae to Davy Crockett at the Alamo. In his tightly structured narrative, Nathaniel Philbrick brilliantly sketches the two larger-than-life antagonists: Sitting Bull, whose charisma and political savvy earned him the position of leader of the Plains Indians, and George Armstrong Custer, one of the Union's greatest cavalry officers and a man with a reputation for fearless and often reckless courage. Philbrick reminds readers that the Battle of the Little Bighorn was also, even in victory, the last stand for the Sioux and Cheyenne Indian nations. Increasingly outraged by the government's Indian policies, the Plains tribes allied themselves and held their ground in southern Montana. Within a few years of Little Bighorn, however, all the major tribal leaders would be confined to Indian reservations. Throughout, Philbrick beautifully evokes the history and geography of the Great Plains with his characteristic grace and sense of drama. The Last Stand is a mesmerizing account of the archetypal story of the American West, one that continues to haunt our collective imagination.
