Materials and Textures While geometry describes the shape of an object, its material describes how its surface will appear when rendered. In the real world, when light hits a surface, it reacts to the surface qualities. Some of the light is absorbed and some is reflected. A shiny object reflects light directly, while a matte object diffuses the light. While reflected light does not actually illuminate surfaces in Autodesk Maya, materials and textures can be set up to simulate the real-world reaction of surfaces to light. To create realistic images, material qualities such as color, specularity, reflectivity, transparency and surface detail must all be set. Maya uses special connected nodes called Shading Networks to set up the material qualities of your surfaces. Textures let 3D artists create more complex looks for their surfaces.
