TURTLE ISLAND: A JOURNEY TO THE WORLD'S MOST REMOTE

Ascension Island is a wilderness of volcanic rock, land crabs, and stray donkeys in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It erupted into existence about 600 years ago and was discovered by the Portugese in 1501. However, it was only when Napoleon was exiled to nearby St. Helena that the island gained strategic importance and was snatched up by the British. It went on to become a crucial "node" in both world wars and the Cold War. The 1960s saw the building of a NASA base which was crucial to the Apollo missions. The thousand or so people who live on this island now do so because they have been brought here by their work for NASA as fishermen, or simply to service the existence of the colony. Ghione's work was to travel there to study Ascension's most famous inhabitants: the extraordinary sea turtles that arrive each year to lay their eggs. Combining history, science, geography, and journalism, this quirky and charming book is a wonderful tale about a very peculiar place - a tiny piece of Britishness absurdly at odds with the reality of its bleakness and isolation. Ghoine has a sharp eye for the curiosities of island life, such as the single grocery shop that sells Christmas goods year round, the ritual of throwing paint at a particular curbstone, and many more. Come and experience the strange world of Ascension Island first-hand!

CRACKER'S MULE

During the polio scare of the 1950s, a boy's parents send him for the summer from his small-towm Florida home to the refuge of his grandparents' farm in rural Alabama. He settles into country life with Papa and Bigmother. The locals nickname him Cracker, after the term for Florida cowboys. One day he and Papa go to a livestock auction and Papa lets him buy a small mule. The mule turns out to be blind and Cracker must suffer ridicule while caring for the animal he comes to love. Over the summer Cracker teaches the mule to respond to his voice and together they learn to plow. MULES, MINES, AND ME IN MEXICO, 1895-1932

Morris B. Parker's colorful reminiscences as a mining engineer in the rough, frontier Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua at the turn of the century provide an engrossing story. For 37 years Parker witnesses the drama of day-to-day life and death in Sonoran mining camps. He describes in his memoirs wht it was like to ride in a stagecoach pulled by 13 small mules over the treacherous Sierra Madre, his encounters with such historical figures as Pancho Villa, and his capture by Yaqui Indians. Parker's sharp wit and use of crisp language reveal the times, people and places of a truly golden age for Americans in Mexico.

SAMULE THE WORTHLESS WHITE MULE

This is a true story. I had long searched for a young, white mule to raise and train and was expecting to find one around six months old. When I did finally find one he was a newborn and being sold along with his mother. They were consigned to a Fox Trotter sale that was coming up in a couple weeks. I was not interested in the mare and did not attend the sale. Little did I know, the owner had decided her baby was a worthless, white mule and may hinder her sale. He left the little, three week old mule to fend for himself, alone on pasture, and sold the mare. As soon as I found out his plight I raced over there and paid a steep price to rescue a weak and starving, six week old, orphan mule. Years later, wanting SaMule to get the best in training, I thought I had found a top notch trainer in Kentucky. I had even taken a trip there to see his facility and meet his staff. I was so excited about the prospect of finally being able to ride my dream mule. I had done all his ground work and knew he was ready for a real education. I was thrilled the day they picked him up and he was headed for Mule School. Five months later he was returned to me nearly starved to death and covered with welts and wounds. Once again I had paid a steep price... and so had SaMule. Is he worthless? I think not! SaMule has proven himself to be kind, brave, determined and forgiving.

MULES & MEN

MULES AND MEN contains many types of tales, including fanciful myths devised to explain the mysteries of nature and life (why the rabbit has a short tail, why some people are black), imaginative stories about how to defeat the devil or win a loved one, and anecdotes that condemn American injustice toward blacks. Hurston also introduces the reader to the realm of Hoodoo, or Voodoo, and its practitioners. Hurston produced in MULES AND MEN a book that is not only a mine of information for professionals but a source of delight to the general reader.

MULE BONE: A COMEDY OF NEGRO LIFE IN THREE ACTS

Mule Bone is the only collaboration between Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes, two stars of the Harlem Renaissance, and it holds an unparalleled place in the annals of African-American theater. Set in Eatonville, Florida--Hurston's hometown and the inspiration for much of her fiction--this energetic and often farcical play centers on Jim and Dave, a two-man song-and-dance team, and Daisy, the woman who comes between them. Overcome by jealousy, Jim hits Dave with a mule bone and hilarity follows chaos as the town splits into two factions: the Methodists, who want to pardon Jim; and the Baptists, who wish to banish him for his crime. Included in this edition is the fascinating account of the Mule Bone copyright dispute between Hurston and Hughes that ended their friendship and prevented the play from being performed until its debut production at the Lincoln Center Theater in New York City in 1991--sixty years after it was written. Also included is "The Bone of Contention," Hurston's short story on which the play was based; personal and often heated correspondence between the authors; and critical essays that illuminate the play and the dazzling period that came to be known as the Harlem Renaissance.
