It is a national board that provides mainly distance education, regular education to all the rural and urban areas along with vocational education. It administers an examination for secondary i.e. 10thand higher secondary i.e. class 12th. NIOS provides flexibility w.r.t admission, choice of subject, examination, and on-demand education. NIOS release application forms and conduct exams twice a year. To cater to the different needs of students there are four streams under which learners can get admission to NIOS. These streams are- Stream I- it includes online admissions for all learners Stream II- Includes admission for learners who want to appear in Oct/Nov exams. Stream III- Admission for learners who want to appear in On Demand Examination System (ODES) of NIOS for Secondary level. Stream IV- For learners to want to appear in On Demand Examination System (ODES) of NIOS for Senior Secondary level.
