James H. Donelan describes how two poets, a philosopher, and a composer - Hölderlin, Wordsworth, Hegel, and Beethoven - developed an idea of self-consciousness based on music at the turn of the nineteenth century. This idea became an enduring cultural belief: the understanding of music as an ideal representation of the autonomous creative mind. Against a background of political and cultural upheaval, these four major figures - all born in 1770 - developed this idea in both metaphorical and actual musical structures, thereby establishing both the theory and the practice of asserting self-identity in music. Beethoven still carries the image of the heroic composer today; this book describes how it originated in both his music and in how others responded to him. Bringing together the fields of philosophy, musicology, and literary criticism, Donelan shows how this development emerged from the complex changes in European cultural life taking place between 1795 and 1831.

Sterling A. Brown's achievement and influence in the field of American literature and culture are unquestionably significant. His poetry has been translated into Spanish, French, German, and Russian and has been read in literary circles throughout the world. He is also one of the principal architects of black criticism. His critical essays and books are seminal works that give an insider's perspective of literature by and about blacks. Leopold Sedar Senghor, who became familiar with Brown's poetry and criticism in the 1920s and 1930s, called him "an original militant of Negritude, a precursor of our movement." Yet Joanne V. Gabbin's book, originally published in 1985, remains the only study of Brown's work and influence. Gabbin sketches Brown's life, drawing on personal interviews and viewing his achievements as a poet, critic, and cultural griot. She analyzes in depth the formal and thematic qualities of his poetry, revealing his subtle adaptation of song forms, especially the blues. To articulate the aesthetic principles Brown recognized in the writings of black authors, Gabbin explores his identification of the various elements that have come together to create American culture.

The Lion Kicks: Poems #spiritualebook #christianebook #religiousebook #christiankindlebook #christianamazonkindlebook #christianbook For centuries, Christian denominations have fought over whose practices are most holy or sacred. While the different branches of Christ’s teachings have been arguing, fighting, and killing amongst themselves, the Devil and his evil thoughts have been able to roam free and strike fear into the hearts of man and society. Alas comes a poetry collection to unite all individuals under one Christian banner, and celebrate our favorite heroes of God. This poetry book aims to find commonality amongst all who enjoy and know the scripture to be true. From Noah and King David to Paul and the apostles, this collection of lyrics celebrates the good fight of God and his soldiers. It highlights and analyzes who these biblical figures were back then, and what they symbolize now in the modern world. This book is for love. This book is for faith. This declaration and imaginative journey is for God, who is great. Let these new words ignite a new inspiration and hope. In the name of The Father, The Son, & The Holy Spirit, I pray. Amen. https://www.amazon.com/Lion-Kicks-Matthew-Nino-Azcuy/dp/1532662017/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-lion-kicks-matthew-nino-azcuy/1130614172

Essential Information English language classes are offered through undergraduate and graduate programs that include English, English education, English literature and English for foreign language students. The types of courses taken in English-related degree programs depend on the program's area of study, but they often focus on literature, writing, grammar or pronunciation. Students pursuing a degree in English or English literature often read materials from various genres of literature, including poetry, dramas and novels, as well as take specialized writing classes. Those in an English education program study the history of the language, composition, grammar, reading, language acquisition and language development. Such education programs include several other courses that prepare students to make lesson plans and teach classes. International students may take standalone courses that teach them the basic English skills needed to study in the India and out of India. List of Classes Below are some descriptions of common English language courses. Expository Writing Course This English class, or one similar, is required for most college students in the United States. In it, students gain the writing and researching abilities that will help them succeed in higher education. They write papers and practice using a writing style and structure that is acceptable at the university level. Often, students edit their own work for basic grammar, style and spelling mistakes. English Pronunciation and Speaking Course This English language class is for foreign language speakers who are learning to speak English without an accent. Students repeat words and sentences, working with a language coach to correct their pronunciation. Topics of study include phrasing, intonation and rhythm, all of which come naturally to a native speaker. By taking courses like this, speakers of foreign languages learn to speak English more articulately and gain self-confidence in speaking. Students have the opportunity to talk with their classmates and professors, discussing ways to decrease misunderstanding that comes from mispronunciation and word misuse. English Grammar Course English grammar courses are offered at beginning level to new speakers of English; at the advanced level, grammar courses are designed for native and fluent speakers studying English, English literature or English education. Beginning students practice writing sentences and phrases correctly, paying attention to verb agreement, conjugation and sentence structure. Advanced courses are designed so students can increase their writing skills to further idea development and coherence. At any level, students demonstrate their skills by researching and writing term papers. Reading and Vocabulary Course Typically, these courses broaden students' vocabularies and increase their reading abilities. Students learn to speed read and scan written materials for information that will be useful for research purposes. In English language courses like this, students develop analytical discussion skills. Often, students are required to read about current news and events, sometimes a specified number of pages or articles per week, and discuss them in class. The course develops students' rhetoric skills so they can create and support an argument based on fact.

The On Poems by Philodemus (c. 110-35 BC), the Epicurean philosopher and poet who taught Vergil and influenced Horace, is our main source for Hellenistic literary theory. In Book 1 Philodemus summarizes a survey of previously unknown poetic and aesthetic theories. Compiled by Crates of Mallos this survey reviews the critical theories of earlier Epicureans, Peripatetics, and Stoics, who argued in some way that sound is the source of poetic excellence, and that the ear, unaided by the mind, can judge it. Philodemus led the reaction against this invasion of Hellenistic literary criticism by musical theory, arguing that form and content are interrelated, and that substantive content, not pretty sound, is what makes poetry worthwhile. The 200 fragments of Book 1 were entirely jumbled after its discovery at the site of Vesuvius' destruction of Herculaneum. This edition reconstitutes their original sequence, according to a new method, while exploiting previously unknown manuscript sources and new techniques for reading the extant pieces. In thus restoring this important aesthetic treatise from antiquity, it makes a major addition to the corpus of classical literature.

Approaching the Hebrew Bible as a work of literary art, Yair Mazor examines its many genres, including historical narratives, poetic narratives, poetry, psalms, and songs. Line drawings from a late nineteenth-century Bible illustrate many of the most famous scenes in scripture, suggesting another aesthetic layer of the text. By breaking the Bible into constituent parts, Mazor traces the range of its writing styles, reconfiguring the work as a literary collage and an artistic masterpiece. He shows how the aesthetics of the texts that comprise the Bible serve its over-arching message, and he develops a literary portrait of its authors by decoding their cryptic aesthetic devices.

The Upanishads are the oldest and clearest expression of the perennial philosophy that is the inner core of all the great religions. Passed down by word of mouth for five thousand years, they teach of an absolute and unified field of intelligence that underlies and permeates all creation. This divine ground is our own nature, and to bring our lives into conscious harmony with it is the ultimate purpose of human existence. This lucid translation captures both the poetry and the precision of the original, rendering accessible an extraordinary body of spiritual wisdom as never before. Speaking from the depth of the everlasting NOW, the Upanishads make the mind soar and the heart sing, and point the soul to freedom.
