There were some very good reasons for the success of the first Moto G - a solid (if not dazzling) design, good performance, stock Android, a nice screen and a price that left the competition fumbling for their drawing boards. The second generation Moto G carries forward much of the same tradition but with a few updates. This time, it has a larger 5-inch screen as opposed to 4.5-inch on the first gen and an updated, more modern design. The new design is not terribly appealing but it offers a solid feel and a softly rounded back panel that sits well in the hand. The back panel is removable of course and under it you get access to two micro SIM card slots and importantly, the micro SD slot (which was missing in the first gen Moto G). The removable back has a nice matte finish and you can always swap it out for a different colour. Up front, the display takes up most of the space (Android buttons are on-screen) and you get stereo speakers which is nice. What's a bit puzzling is that Motorola chose to retain the same hardware as the first gen - a 1.2Ghz Snapdragon 400 SoC with 1GB RAM and a 720p resolution for the screen (which gives it a lower pixel density since the screen itself is larger). It even has the same size battery as before. While the first G was decidedly entry-level, the new G has a higher resolution (8MP vs 5MP) camera that can punch above its price range. The stock Android keeps everything running super-smooth and while it doesn't have the performance of a flagship, it's more than enough to satisfy all but the most demanding users. Those looking for other options at the same price can consider the Asus Zenfone 5 - it offers much of the same but with a better design, better performance and a slightly better scree..
