Girija Devi  (born 8 May 1929) is an Indian classical singer of the  Seniya and Banaras   gharanas. She performs classical and light classical music and has helped elevate the profile of  thumri. [1]  Her father played the  harmonium  and taught music, and had Devi take lessons in singing  khyal  and  tappa  from vocalist and  sarangi  player Sarju Prasad Misra starting at the age of five. [2]  She starred in the movie  Yaad rahe  aged nine and continued her studies under Sri Chand Misra in a variety of styles. [2] Performing career [edit] Devi made her public debut 1949 on  All India Radio   Allahabad, after getting married to a businessman circa 1946, but faced opposition from her mother and grandmother, because it was traditionally believed that no upper class woman should perform publicly. His grandfather was a disciple of the vocalist Lt. Pankaj kumar Mallik (was a composer of Bombay film Industry). When Subhasis was a child of 4 he developed an interest in playing Tabla from his father. He wanted to be the best tabla player of India. As he grown, he decided to learn of playing Pakhawaj. Subhasis received extensive ‘Talim’ for over one decade from Achrya Sri Gurudas Ghosh & Pt. Dalchand Sharma. Subhasis is an ‘AMBIDEXTER GENIUS’. After being a best tabla player he has developed the art of playing ‘PAKHAWAJ’ by reversing the sides despite maintaining the rhythm as in normal pakhawaj performance. He took his feet ‘LIMCA BOOK OF RECORDS’- 2011- for unique Pakhawaj playing, Subhasis has also invented, designed and introduced some new instruments viz, – SRUTI, AWAWAZ, CHHAR-TARANG and the like. He has got ‘PATENT’ for his such unique invention In the year of 2000, Subhasis was introduced to distinguished instrumentalist – Guru. Lt. Brojen Biswas, the inventor, maker. Player of ‘BROJO – TARANG’(As a xylophone) and the close associate of the music composer S.D.Barman(Bombay). Then Sabyasachi began to turn of his energices to instrumental music(folk & classial). It is a proud privilege that probably after R.D.Burman(Bombay), Subhasis is the last disciple of GURU – Sir Brojen Biswas, Subhasis has developed Brojo Taranga to Braj Vina, Subhasis is also inventor & player of ‘Panchatantri Vina’. After the demise of the great guru, Subhasis came in Delhi and has been continuing his “Telim” from Sitar-wizard Padmabhushan Pt. Debu Chaudhari(Delhi).
