AUSTRALIA - "SHIPS ~ YEAR OF THE SURF LIFESAVER" 3D MNH IN MUMBAI
Australia - " SHIPS ~ YEAR OF THE SURF LIFESAVER. " MNH ~ 3D / Lenticular Miniature Sheet ! 2007 celebrates the Year of the Surf Lifesaver. It is also the centenary of Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA). One hundred years ago the Surf Bathing Association of NSW was established, and it brought standardisation to surf lifesaving instruction, regulation and practice at the fledgling clubs around Sydney. It is from this organization that SLSA evolved. The Surf Bathing Association was, however, preceded by a branch of Britain ’s Royal Life Saving Society, which was set up in Sydney in 1894. Since 1924 it has been responsible for still water safety (in harbours, inland water systems and pools) while the Surf Bathing Association, now known as SLSA, was made responsible for water safety at beaches around Australia ’s coastline. Until 1902, it was illegal in Australia to “surf bathe” during daylight hours, and even then male and female bathers were segregated. Since those early years, beach culture has become a key facet of the Australian lifestyle and identity, and the surf lifesaving movement has grown in response to this. With the majority of the Australian population living within 50 kilometres of the coast, the beach and the activities it facilitates have become cornerstones in the lives of many Australians and the surf lifesaver has become an iconic figure. The $2.45 stamp, a double definitive size, is the first Australian lenticular stamp to be produced. It shows an inflatable rescue boat (IRB), an important part of lifesaving equipment, pushing powerfully through a wave. Year: 2007. (SSNJ13).
