All of them make use of plant products in their medicines. In recent times Indian systems of medicine have been getting more and more prominence as these, unlike allopathic drugs (especially antibiotics), do not produce drastic side effects. Indian systems of medicine include Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and homoeopathy (AYUSH). Several insti­tutions have been established to develop these systems in India, and there are about four lakh practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine today. Recognising the contribution of these non-allopathic systems to the national health, the Government of India created, in 1995, a new Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&.H) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Now it is known as the Ministry of AYUSH.
