Materials and Textures While geometry describes the shape of an object, its material describes how its surface will appear when rendered. In the real world, when light hits a surface, it reacts to the surface qualities. Some of the light is absorbed and some is reflected. While reflected light does not actually illuminate surfaces in Autodesk Maya, materials and textures can be set up to simulate the real-world reaction of surfaces to light.
