Materials and Textures While geometry describes the shape of an object, its material describes how its surface will appear when rendered. In the real world, when light hits a surface, it reacts to the surface qualities. Some of the light is absorbed and some is reflected. A shiny object reflects light directly, while a matte object diffuses the light.
